Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
-
Narrative therapy is about helping you make sense of the stories you tell about your life. It focuses on separating you from your problems and empowering you to rewrite those narratives in a way that brings clarity, strength, and hope. This approach is often used for things like trauma, identity struggles, or low self-esteem, and it can help you feel more in control of your life.

What happens during an EMDR session?
In EMDR sessions, clients are asked to focus on a specific traumatic memory, with attention given to the negative image, belief, and body sensations related to this memory. Clients are then asked to focus on a positive belief that would indicate the issue was resolved. While focusing on the distressing memory, the therapist will begin sets of side-to-side eye movements or tapping (bilateral stimulation) and the client will be guided to notice what comes to mind after each set. Experiences include shifts in insight or changes in images, feelings, or beliefs regarding the past event, including a reduction of distress associated with the memory.
You can think of EMDR as a desensitization therapy. The memories won’t disappear but they won’t be as overwhelming or intense.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that understands the mind as naturally made up of different “parts,” each with its own thoughts, emotions, and roles. This is not the same as having a “split personality” or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). In fact, everyone experiences different parts of themselves—for example, a part that wants to rest and another that feels guilty about not being productive.
IFS sees these parts as completely natural and often protective. Through therapy, we learn how to relate to them with curiosity and compassion, rather than judgment or fear. At the core of IFS is the belief that we all have a wise, centered Self—a place of calm, clarity, and confidence—that can help guide us toward healing.

In Relational Somatic Therapy we will work together to bear witness to the information that your body holds. With the use of present time awareness of the felt sensations in the body to access information about what you need in order to heal.
‘Soma’ is a Greek word that means ‘the body living in its wholeness’. Somatics is an inquiry into knowing ourselves and the world around us, by listening to the body and its language (which is sensation-based).
Unlike traditional '“top down” or cognitive-behavioural therapies, somatic based approaches deepen your felt sense of connection with self.

Therapy length varies for everyone. Some find relief in a few sessions, while deeper healing may take longer. IFS unfolds at your pace, helping you build self-compassion, while EMDR can bring significant shifts in a shorter time. We’ll regularly check in to ensure therapy meets your needs, whether short-term or ongoing. My goal is to support your healing in a way that feels right for you.

I do not provide formal diagnoses, but I recognize that for some, a diagnosis can be validating or necessary for medical or insurance purposes. My approach is not about labeling but about understanding your experiences with care and curiosity. My approach focuses on healing, self-awareness, and resilience rather than just symptom management. If a diagnosis would be helpful for you, I’m happy to support you in exploring options and connecting with the right professionals.

I offer sliding scale fees for individuals who are experiencing financial difficulties and may find it challenging to afford the standard cost of therapy. To ensure this service is provided equitably, I request proof of income and an understanding of your financial situation. This helps me determine an appropriate rate while also balancing my own financial responsibilities.
It’s important to note that offering sliding scale fees means I’m covering part of the cost. As such, I offer this option primarily to individuals without health insurance and those with low income. I’m happy to discuss this further and explore potential adjustments if finances are a concern for you.
